Join Me On A Journey – Step Eight

I finished my notes about my paternal grandfather. That completes all my grandparents. I have written a page about each of them, listing the things that I remember about each of them.

This week I will go back to the beginning and fill in the vital statistics for each one. I will search my family records for places and dates for births, marriages, deaths. I will also include baptism and church confirmations where I can find them.

At the same time I have been continuing to play with colours and create some art pages in my journal. In this one, I did a washed background of gelatos. I put a foggy sun in the sky and included a stock of wheat to remind me of Manitoba. I stamped on a house to represent the house my grandfather built and the reminder that a house should be built on a firm foundation. My grandfather built the house around 1920 and it still stands today.

The image isn’t very clear but the overall effect was kind of foggy, like an early morning haze.

I would love to hear the stories you are remembering about your grandparents. Be free to include them in a comment.

Join Me on a Journey Step Seven

This week I journaled about my paternal grandmother. She is the one that I knew the best because I grew up living only a few blocks away from her. I will be adding memory pages about her for some time to come.

My art page for this week is a little different. I wanted to represent the love I felt for and from my grandmother and also the energy that she should in her life. I started by smudging the background with a baby wipe and red and orange Big Brush pens from Faber-Castell. I liked the muted affect that it gave to the page.

Then I used a mask to create blue and red dots on the page.

I decided to try a little zentangle up one side of the page and for the first time I put some colour in the doodle.

I used a piece of the mast to mat the cloud for my Bible message and added a stamp of a gentle woman in the background and a humming bird.

I hope the overall affect is one of energy and love. Again I am trying things for the first time and the balance is often not quite as I would like it but it is interesting to work on it.

I have one more grandparent to write about and then I will start getting into gathering some statistics.

Please comment and let me know what you are working on. Put in a link so I can see your work too.

Step Six: Join Me On a Journey

This week I have been on a the Disney Cruise Ship WOnder, with two of our grandchildren. It was such a wonderful time. They live on the other side of Canada so we only see them once or twice each year. Even with that much involvement we know them quite well and it was a joy to get to know them better. We did side trips in Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. They panned for gold, ate BBQ salmon and studied glaciers. I found out that Daniel loves seafood and will try just about anything off the menu and Andrew has the most wonderful laugh. It was a thoroughly lovely vacation.

I thought I would spend time writing memories in my little journal book but I found I was having too much fun making new memories. For that reason I didn’t get on to this weeks blog entry until Thursday night.

This week I wrote my memories about my step-grandfather. I didn’t know him well but found I had lots of memories as each one unwrapped the next. I tried to write what I felt about what I knew about him. I didn’t worry about dates, I just wrote what I remembered. I will seek out more detailed information about his life statistics after I have written my memories of each individual that I want to remember.

step six journey art page
For my art page I took out my gelatos and did a muted wash of light blue. I coloured lightly on the page and then smudged it all with a baby whip. Then I rubbed some green on a stamping block, added water and then used a brush to accent the edges of the page. I look forward to watching some videos over the next week and finding some more things that I can do with my art materials.

step six pine stamp
Then I pulled out an old Stampin Up leaf set and decided to stamped a Pine branch motif up the side of the page in dark green. I over washed it with some silver but it doesn’t show up very well.

I am definitely doing this in baby steps but it is going forward. I like that I have made a committment to post every Friday and it gives me a goal each week. I open my house to anyone who wants to join me to scrapbook or paint on Thursday nights, so I always have company as I am finishing up.

Over the next two weeks I will be writing about the grandparents that I knew the best, so I will be writing much more.

Step Four: Join Me On a Journey

I have been continuing my journey to introduce my grandparents to my grandchildren. I started writing about my grandmother, Elsie May Sear (Patterson, Manning) and each little memory reminded me of another. I felt so close to her as I was writing. I kept remembering more and more. I realized what a strong person she must have been.

Today I am writing about my grandfather. James Alexander Patterson. I never met him. He died when my mom was really little and I know very little about him. My mom remembers him as a very gentle kind man. I will write the things I have been told about him and then over the next week I will write about my mom’s step father, Harry Edgar Manning. Although he is also dead now, I did know him when I was younger

This week I have been having fun with my art side of the page.

wipe across horizontal lines to create background

Using my gelatos from Faber Castell Design Memory Craft, I started by making horizontal stripes on the page. I started with light greens and worked my way through blues to purple. I then used a baby wipe to wipe up the page and then down the page in vertical stripes.

plaid backgroundI went horizontally across the page and then vertically repeatedly until I like the effect. This kind of made a plaid pattern with a crayon effect. If you want a richer smoother surface, you can add the horizontal stripes again and wipe it until you get the desired finish.

flower stamp

Then I used a flower stamp and a green big brush marker from Faber Castell Design Memory Craft to make a design on the bottom of the page and a small stamp in the top corner.

coloured in some of the leavesI coloured in a few of the leaves for effect using one of the deeper greens from my background.

embellish flower
I embellished this rose die with silver ink and added a little ribbon.

Isaiah 46:8

The Bible verse that I chose reflects my thoughts about my Grandmother.
Isaiah 40:8 The grass withers and flowers fade but the word of of our God lasts forever.

Have you joined me on this journey, please make a comment and let me know. It has been a month now and I need some encouragement to continue on the path.

Step Three Join Me On A Journey

This week I worked on the cover of my album. I decided I wanted a tree, to represent life. I cut one out with my E-craft cutter and used the silhouette as a mask.

tree mask

I then used some brown and black inks and several sponge surfaces to ink the tree trunk and branches. It turned out flatter looking than I wanted.

inks and sponges
I will give it more definition and dimension with some pen work later.

front of journal

I am having fun writing down my memories of my grandmother and I find that each memory seems to unlock another. I think I will be doing much more writing than I had at first thought.

If you have a grandparent who is still alive, start listening when they are talking. Pull up a chair and grab a cup of coffee and listen. Try not to probe too much. Just get them started. Listen for stories about when they were children or teenagers. How were things different then? What did they like to do? What was their favourite food? My grandparents used to love to talk but I wasn’t very good at listening.

Think about the things you would like to share if you were introducing this person to someone. What makes them interesting ? What makes them different.

Recently my sister called and told me that in clearing out my uncle’s apartment, she found my grandmother’s Bible. I was so excited. I had to wait several days to get it in my hands but I was pretty sure I would find that my grandmother had the tradition of writing all the family dates in the middle of her Bible. Sure enough, so much information was there that I didn’t have before. It took me back a generation further into the past. It will also allow me to add lots of dates to my journal as I go.

Please join me in this journey and leave me a comment. Have you ever done anything like this? Do you have some tips for me?

Step One – Join me on a Journey

Well the journey has begun. We are going to compile all the information we can find and remember about our grandparents so that we can introduce them to our grandchildren. This is a great way to honour those who went before us.Elsie Sear, James Patterson, Evelyn and Elizabeth

Today’s step is to decide what we want to use to record our information. My final goal is an album but I need a place to record information as it comes to me.

There are several different ways you can go here. The most important thing about choosing an option is to have everything in one place and to choose an option that you are willing to commit to. I have listed a few here but you may think of others.

    1. a simple notebook or scribbler with one person’s name at the top of each page. This is easy and you can carry it with you.

    2. A three ring binder would work well. With this option you can add more pages and dividers as you get more people and information.

    3. A recipe card box with one person on each card. Again this is simple and easy to use. Cards can be taken with you in your pocket and then refiled when not being used.

    4. A computer file. Not as portable but if you are used to computers, the information is then easy to tranfer into other products when you are ready to make your album. Changes are easy to make. If you go with this option, please remember to back it up each time you make changes.

    5. If you are creative you may want to make an art journal or handmade album to put your information in. You can be decorating pages as you are adding information.

    6. A box where you can put all the slips of paper that you have written on. You can organize them into piles later when you start to write about each person.

Again the main thing is to have a special place to put everything so that you know where to get it when you want to add information.

Please leave a comment and let me know what you have decided to use for your initial information storage.

Looking ahead. Next week I will tell you which option I chose and we will begin to talk about memories.

Join Me on a Journey

Journey across the northern Hemisphere

ANcestors, through the years.

Welcome to the Journey blog hop around the UK, Canada and the United States. We are a group of ladies who met through an online business course and other creative courses.

We have chosen Journey as the theme for this blog hop. It’s a word that can be interpreted spiritually, physically, literally and creatively and we hope you will enjoy your journey as you hop around our blogs.

Here’s your itinerary:

Who knows what you may find as you travel across the northern hemisphere today!

grandchildren, genealogy, generations

Today I am starting a Journey….

It is a journey to connect my grandchildren to my grandparents. It is a journey to remember everything I ever knew about my grandparents and scrapbook them in a way that will make them real to my grandchildren. This is my attempt to give them roots. To introduce them to the strong pioneering people who came to Canada to forge a better life. I will journey first through my memories and create a journal of my grandparents and aunts and uncles to attempt to tell the story of their struggles and victories. I will hopefully remember the stories I have been told and the experiences I have had with these wonderful people. I will then seek out others who have information to help me. There are some in our family who have done much in the genealogy areas. Finally I will put together scrapbook pages to create an album and duplicate it for my grandchildren.

This journey will cover many years and many miles. It is not begun without some trepidation and fear because I am not a writer. Will I complete this task or will I fall short? I do not know but I know that I am determined to try. I think I am up to the task but I will call on my Lord at each step and at each turn. I will ask Him to give me strength and remind me of the particular events He wants my grandchildren to know about. I believe this is so important to my loved ones. It will show them the strong deep roots that under gird their lives. In turn, I hope they will carry these ancestors and their stories to their own children and grandchildren

I would like to hear what you have to say about this journey. Would you like to join me? I will be taking this trip in very small steps which I will post for you every Friday. Please comment and let me know what you think. If you leave a comment before Sunday August 5th at 12 midnight EST, you will be entered into a draw to win papers and cardstock stickers from the Vintage Shop by My Little Shoebox.

If you are here on the blog hop, your next stop is Nana
